X-SPACE Fujifilm Imaging Space presents “Private Scenes: Masahisa Fukase Photography Exhibition” from April 24 to June 3, 2025. As the most comprehensive personal retrospective of Masahisa Fukase in Asia to date, this exhibition systematically sorts out and displays the important works of the artist’s 40-year creative career, outlining the complete trajectory of the artist’s artistic exploration. It includes the artist’s most famous frustrated work “Crow”, his beloved muse “Yoko”, and series of works such as “Private Scenes”, “Family” and “Game”.

Although Fukase Masahisa is generally considered a radical, experimental artist who constantly challenges the boundaries of photography, he was born into a traditional family that “runs a photo studio as the core and belief of the family.” As a “genius” who “has a lot of good skills” but always causes trouble in the photo studio, he once stood at the crossroads of “becoming a photographer” or “becoming a photographer.” As one of the earliest photographers to practice “private photography,” Fukase Masahisa’s loving eyes and camera lens are always aimed at those around him: his wife and family. He uses humor and sometimes crazy methods to explore the most personal and profound emotions without reservation.

Masahisa Fukase established his unique artistic status in the 1960s. He once stood in the spotlight of the international art stage with Japanese photographers such as Daido Moriyama and Nobuyoshi Araki as artistic partners. However, an unfortunate fall in 1992 caused the artist to suffer severe brain damage and he passed away in 2012. Masahisa Fukase, like a star hanging high in the night sky that suddenly dimmed, has since been forever associated with the gloomy and mysterious “Ravens”.

During these unfortunate twenty years, most of his works were rarely seen by the world. Today, we can appreciate the artist’s creations so completely thanks to the unremitting efforts of Mr. Kosuge Satoshi. Since 2000, he has begun to study Masahisa Fukase by collecting the artist’s magazine submissions. In 2014, he founded the Masahisa Fukase Archive and served as the curator. Over the years, he has conducted in-depth research on the creative background of Masahisa Fukase’s various series of works and the artist’s own mental journey, allowing a large number of archives that have never been shown before to gradually emerge in the public eye.
